The University of Nottingham has been providing social work education for over 70 years. We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate routes to social work qualification, and those who graduate with our BA Social Work or MA Social Work qualification are eligible to apply to register with Social Work England and practice under the legally protected title of ‘social worker’. The qualification is also recognised in other UK and international jurisdictions.
Our students come from across the UK and across the globe, and join a community of over XXX students at University of Nottingham. The Centre for Social Work is part of the School of Sociology & Social Policy, which is in turn part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Alongside social work, our School also offers a range undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sociology, criminology and social & public policy, together with a vibrant postgraduate research (PhD) student body.
Our BA Social Work and MA Social Work qualifying programmes are delivered by a team of academics with diverse professional social work backgrounds including statutory sector work in child protection, looked-after children, disabled children, adult mental health and learning disability teams, and voluntary sector work both in the UK and internationally. We work closely with the D2N2 Social Work Teaching Partnership to deliver our social work programmes. This partnership involves service user, service provider and higher education organisations from across the East Midlands. Service user participation is embedded in all aspects of our social work programmes, including applicant selection and interview processes, delivery of teaching, and assessing student skills. Current social work practitioners also contribute to teaching and assessment.
As well as teaching, academic colleagues are also involved in researching child and adult social work practice in the UK and beyond. We have strong links with the Ann Craft Trust, a national charity based within the University of Nottingham which works to safeguard adults at risk of abuse, and the University of Nottingham Rights Lab which works to end slavery and exploitation both in the UK and internationally. We have also led ground-breaking research about which aims to safeguarding vulnerable adults from forced, unlawful or predatory marriage and civil partnership: the My Marriage, My Choice website for further information and resources.
